Do you know when to speak or write "There is" OR "It is" ?

Updated: Sep 28, 2021

English can be difficult to learn.

All the little things are hard to learn - like THERE or IT at the beginning of a sentence.

There are beautiful purple trees in Australia. These trees were imported from South America. This tree has a distinctive purple flower. It blooms from late September to early December in Australia.

Keep it simple - learn these FOUR RULES to help you.

  1. After "There is/has been/was ..." -- NOUN or noun phrase

  2. After "It is/was/has been ..." -- ADJECTIVE or description

  3. There = introduce something for the first time | It = possibly something already mentioned and SPECIFIC - one thing

  4. There = to/at/in a place

Then there are some expressions you should learn, for example:-

  1. There is bound to be a breakthrough soon.

  2. There's no point trying to fix something that is broken.

  3. There is no need for you to go to the USA to learn English.

Also, we often use "it" to talk about

  • time e.g. It is 4pm in Brisbane, and it's 8am in Paris.

  • distance e.g. It takes 24 hours to get from Australia to England.

  • weather e.g. It's cold outside.

Now watch the video to practise with me. It is very important that you hear an English speaker, speak with an English speaker and read more examples.

I'm here to help.

And what about in an IELTS essay - here is another video to help you.
